In 1987, The Mariners Museum was designated as the repository for artifacts and archives from the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on behalf of the federal government. Today, the Museum conserves, interprets and exhibits hundreds of relics from the U.S. Navy's first ironclad vessel. Visitors to the Museum can see these artifacts undergoing the arduous conservation process, while learning the history and stories behind them. What you see now, is the Monitor's revolutionary gun turret, which was recovered by the U.S. Navy, NOAA and The Mariners' Museum on August 5, 2002. It will spend at least 15 years being conserved.
