Though equipped with a snorkel, U-1229 was located by F-21 trackers. Hunter-killer aircraft maneuvered on the F-21 information and spotted the exposed snorkel mast. Forced to the surface, U-1229 suffered a mortal blow in a salvo of depth bombs during this attack.
