The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was legendary as an informally organized secret activity that was responsible for the liberation of thousands of slaves from bondage. Its participants provided safe houses, called stations, for fugitives, called passengers. The Underground Railroad radiated from the south in all directions, and escape was usually initiated by the slaves. In this early stage, when they first escaped, fugitives were dependent on other slaves, friends, and family to shelter, feed, and guide them on their way. Later, contact with the free black community became increasingly significant.
