Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), circa 1810
From the mid-17th to the 19 th century, Rio de Janeiro was the most important port in Brazil's slave trade. As coffee cultivation increased, particularly in the Paraiba Valley in the interior of Rio de Janeiro province, so did the demand for slaves and, with it, Rio's economic significance.
