Indigoterie (Indigo)
Indigo, a plant that produces a blue dye, became an important cash crop in the lower Carolina coastal region during the 18th century. The high price it brought compensated for the foul-smelling, vermin-attracting fermentation process required to produce it. By 1775, South Carolina was exporting almost 1.2 million pounds of indigo to England annually.
