Sailor's Sea Chest from the Brig Sultan
Sailor's Sea Chest from the Brig Sultan
This sea chest was decorated by a sailor. On the inside lid, you can see where the sailor painted a picture of a slave in chains and a slave trader with a whip. Based on your observation of this artifact - try to answer the following questions:
  • Do you think the sailor was for or against the slave trade? Why?
  • Was this sailor involved in the transatlantic trade or the domestic trade? How can you tell?

Continue to look at the painting on this chest. Imagine what each person in this picture is thinking. Now, create a 500 word short story based on your observations.

Students may email their stories to Education@mariner.org. As space is available, we will publish selected stories to this Web site. Not every story submitted will be published, and The Mariners' Museum reserves the right to refuse publication of submissions for any reason.
