A ships chandler, with stores for a commercial ship, readies the supplies in a cargo net for transfer to the ship's deck. Ship's chandler is an old profession whose job is to provide a merchant vessel with food, bedding, work clothes, toiletries and any other item needed by the crew on a long sea voyage. Some of these items are available to the crew through purchase from the ship's slop chest. Others are provided by the shipping company for the sailor's use.
