Scholars' Seminar - For High-School Students
This seminar is designed to introduce and acclimate high school homeschoolers to college level.
  • Historical Research
• Primary & Secondary Source Analysis
• Discussions
• Argumentative, Scholarly Writing
• Presenting

By utilizing journals, databases, various library collections (including the western hemisphere’s largest international maritime history library), museum artifacts and personnel, students will conduct extensive historical research based primarily in two of our most renowned exhibits: The Crabtree or the USS Monitor Center.

Students will also explore exhibition design and virtual education development while working to complete a research-based capstone project, such as a/an:

  • 25-page Seminar Paper
• Audience Series
• Exhibit Proposal
• Historical & Biographical Sketches
• Educational Podcast
• Course Curriculum

Students will have the opportunity to choose which project they would like to complete and which gallery they would prefer to study. (Students will also have the option of proposing a culminating project idea.) Each seminar session is designed to walk students through the steps leading to their projects’ completion. In between sessions, students will be given goals to complete before attending the next session. They will also be required to keep a record of time and work completed.

By completing this seminar, students can attribute these sessions to applicable credit hours (i.e. 20 hours of U.S. history, 5 hours of speech, 11 hours of English composition, etc.). They may also earn the opportunity to present their project during a The Mariners’ Museum or other local lecture; receive recommendation letters from Museum personnel; and qualify for competitive internships.

This 7-month seminar consists of the following:

  • One 2-hour Family Meeting
• Seven 6-hour Seminar Sessions
• Two Required One-on-One Meetings with the Educational Coordinator
• One Scholars’ Symposium Weekend

For scheduled session dates and times, please see the Program Calendar.

Space is limited to 16 students. Cost is $250 for Museum Members and $300 per student for non-members. Fifty percent is due by August 1, 2008, to be paid in full no later than August 16 at the Family Meeting. Program fee includes seminar sessions, academic lectures, behind-the-scenes tours, a student-level membership to The Mariners’ Museum, as well as access to The Mariners’ Museum Library and the Paul and Rosemary Trible Library at Christopher Newport University. Program cost does not include required texts.

To be considered, students must submit an application form. Click here to download the form. To register for the free Q&A session, which will present an overview of this program, please call (757) 591-7743 by July 17, 2008.
