Marine Barometer, mahogany, internal V-shaped case with round-top
Nairne and Blunt, London, England, ca 1780
Gift of Joel Barlow

Edward Nairne constructed what was probably the first marine barometer with a constricted tube for the second voyage of Captain James Cook's (1772-1775). Based on the contemporary descriptions and illustrations researchers believe that this instrument may have traveled with Cook during his third voyage (1776-1779).
