This exhibition offers a broad view of historical, artistic, technical, and contemporary view of the many stories the sea has told over the decades. From spectacular panoramas and misty harbor scenes to isolated seascapes, from classical yacht portraits to ships anchored at dock, each photographer depicts scenes in distinctly different ways. By the Sea presents photographs chosen from the Museum's collection of more than 600,000 photos.

The Monitor Revisited: Pinhole Photography by Willie Anne Wright
November 4, 2006 - April 1, 2007
Running in conjunction with By the Sea, are original photos by renowned pinhole photographer Willie Anne Wright featuring images of the full scale replica of the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor that serves as the icon to the $30 million USS Monitor Center now open, as well as a series of photomontages of important personalities and artifacts associated with the Union vessel. Wright artistically combines her original photographs with historic documents and images to tell insightful stories.
