The Bronze Door Society Annual Dinner Project Selections
The Mariners' Museum would like to present the following proposals for consideration by the current membership of the Bronze Door Society. Selection of projects will be made at the Bronze Door Society Annual Selection Dinner on May 30, 2008.
Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation Online Exhibition
The Museum’s unique collection of Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation photographs calls attention to a pivotal time in America—World War II—when the entire nation was engaged in a struggle against foreign tyranny and global totalitarianism. This first-ever online exhibit will highlight the collection and give voice to an often silenced African American community.
Propeller Conservation
The unique cycloidal propeller in the Museum’s collection served the Hampton Roads ferry Northampton for many years. It has been outside at the Museum since 1955 and is badly in need of conservation. Funds are requested for labor and materials to stabilize this unusual piece of local history.
The Miniature Ships of August and Winifred Crabtree—The Book
The Crabtree Collection of Miniature Ships is one of the most popular exhibits in the Museum, and many visitors wish they could somehow "take home" more than their memories of these superb models. In response to this request, a beautifully illustrated book on the collection has been created that pays homage to August and Winnifred Crabtree and their lifelong passion for maritime history. Funds are requested to publish the book to be sold in the Museum Shop.
The Mariners’ Museum in the Secret Land
On October 31, 1956, Navy Admiral George Dufek and his crew became the first Americans to set foot on the South Pole and the first ever to land there in an airplane. Dufek later became president of the Museum. In February 2008, Museum Conservator Susanne Grieve arrived in Antarctica as the only American in an international crew dedicated to conserving historical sites. We propose a weekend program to celebrate the Museum’s connections with Antarctica featuring films, lectures, and artifact displays. The program would be a major part of the Museums 75th Anniversary Celebration in the fall of 2008.
Timby’s Battery Orient Print
While John Ericsson gets the credit for creating the USS Monitor, did you know that he didn't invent the turret? That recognition should go to Theodore Ruggles Timby, from New York State—only he never got the appropriate credit during his lifetime. This rare lithograph by Endicott & Company shows one of Timby's creations, the six gun battery Orient, in 1865. This will make a wonderful addition to the exhibition Ironclad Revolution and will go far towards honoring Timby appropriately, albeit a century later!
