Biographies of the Crew of the Monitor

Joseph Crown
Gunner's Mate

    Born in New York City, Crown enlisted there for a three-year term on January 20, 1862. He was 39 years old, had blue eyes, black hair, and a swarthy complexion, and stood 5 feet 7 inches tall. By March 6, 1862, he was transferred from the North Carolina to the Monitor, where he served as gunner's mate until December 31, 1862. Crown was transferred to the Catskill in the week ending February 24, 1863, and was discharged from the Philadelphia (formerly the Catskill) on January 25, 1865.
