Biographies of the Crew of the Monitor

Robert Williams
First-Class Fireman

Born in Wales, Robert Williams enlisted in New York for a three-year term as a first-class fireman on February 15, 1862. He was 30 years old, had hazel eyes, black hair, and swarthy complexion, and stood 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall. By March 6, 1862, he was transferred from the North Carolina to the Monitor, where he was assigned ship's number 4. Williams went down with the Monitor on December 31, 1862.
