Conservator, USS Monitor Project
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced candidate for the
position of Conservator. The successful candidate will report to the
Chief Conservator and will work directly with the Monitor Conservation
Project Manager, Senior Conservators, and other staff to treat
artifacts recovered from the ironclad USS Monitor. The primary
responsibility is to develop and implement the documentation and
treatment of one of the large artifacts recovered from the Monitor,
such as the engine, turret, and/or condenser. The successful candidate
will be expected to follow established conservation procedures;
participate in collaborative research projects that involve evaluating
current treatments and developing new ones and examining the state of
deterioration of the artifacts at hand; maintain thorough
documentation of treatments; examine, evaluate, and treat artifacts;
make recommendations for proper storage and exhibition of treated
artifacts; assist with installation of artifacts in exhibits; observe
safe laboratory procedures; and assist with laboratory upkeep.
Experience with metal objects and organic materials from a marine
environment required. Advanced degree in conservation and a minimum of
two years experience in conservation of artifacts from a marine
environment required. This is a temporary/contract full-time,
full-benefits grant-funded position through December 31, 2009 (with
the possibility of extension).
Custodial Services
We are seeking several full-time Custodial and Special Event Support Personnel. These positions perform janitorial services in all Museum facilities/spaces/areas including offices, galleries, meeting rooms, washrooms, entrances, storage areas, etc. In addition, the positions provide event and general labor support to other departments. The positions are very labor intensive, requiring significant physical exertion including lifting and carrying up to 55 lbs. All positions must be able to occasionally work more than 8 hours per day including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Also required are at least two years previous related custodial experience, a State of Virginia driver's license, and ability to work in a fast paced work environment with very diverse activities and changing priorities.
Director Government and Public Relations
We are seeking an experienced Director of Government and Public Relations. This position will be responsible for providing creative, strategic leadership in presenting and promoting The Museum on a regional, national and international level and will act as the organization’s representative with the media and governmental/legislative groups. Primary areas of responsibility will be: the development and implementation of innovative and effective communication efforts; coordination of media interest in The Museum; ensuring regular contacts with target media outlets and handling appropriate responses to media requests; and identification and monitoring of strategic objectives for public and government relations. This position requires the ability to build strong relationships with the media; excellent written, oral and presentation skills; superior planning/organizational/project management skills; and strong interpersonal/team building ability. A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related discipline is required. Two to four years of prior experience is preferred.
Grounds & Landscape Maintenance
We are seeking an experienced person to fill a full-time Groundskeeper and Landscape Maintenance position. The individual will perform various grounds and landscape maintenance assignments as well as oversee contracted services; operate heavy equipment and special purpose vehicles in day-to-day operations and during snow removal operations; install, maintain and repair signs, walkways, ditches, drains, fences, walking bridges and other structures; plant and maintain trees, bushes and other vegetation. The position also provides general labor support as needed. The position is very labor intensive, requiring significant physical exertion including lifting and carrying up to 55 lbs. Must be able to occasionally work more than 8 hours per day including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Also required are at least 5 years previous related grounds and/or landscaping experience, a State of Virginia driver's license, good driving record and ability to work in a fast paced work environment with very diverse activities and changing priorities. An herbicide license is highly desirable but not mandatory during initial employment. Position is classified essential.

Retail Sales Associates
We are seeking long-term, part-time, hourly sales associates for our Museum Gift Shop. Flexible schedules with some evening hours for special events. Weekend availability required. No experience necessary but the ability to work with the public is a must. Job responsibilities include: excellent customer service, merchandising, checking in shipments, register responsibilities, inventory and admissions assistance. Security
We are seeking several individuals to provide Part Time (approximately 30 hrs. per week) facility protection services. This will include promoting security awareness, conducting vehicular and foot patrols and monitoring cameras. Previous security experience is preferred. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be available for any combination of day, evening, weekend and holiday work with variable hours and 10-hour shifts.

The Mariners' Museum
Monitor Conservation Fellowship, 2008-2009
Description
In partnership with the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, is offering a conservation fellowship for treatment of objects excavated from the wreck site of the USS Monitor.
The fellowship is a full-time (35 hours/week) position for one year (July 2008-June 2009) and includes a stipend of $21,000. Additional funding for travel may be available at the discretion of the Museum's chief conservator.
The fellowship entails hands-on treatments of large, industrial, composite objects such as pumps and motors. These objects were submerged in saltwater for 140 years prior to excavation and thus require specialized treatment. The fellow will gain experience in a wide variety of analytical and treatment techniques while working on objects from one of the most significant vessels in naval history.
Eligibility
The successful candidate for the position will be in his/her final year of or have graduated from a recognized conservation graduate or training program. Previous experience working with metal artifacts recovered from a marine environment is preferred.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required.
